EXTENDED PLAY 052: SAMMI CONSTANTINE | 'DOPAMINE' EP | REVIEW

Words by Sam Elliott and Matilda Elliott.

Unapologetically real and raw, Sammi Constantine is effortlessly blending the lines of passion and pop with her debut EP release, Dopamine. Within this small but mighty release, Sammi is enigmatically engaging with emotions in a unique way, that we cannot help but become enthralled with.

The EP starts off strong with title track Dopamine, which marks the end of a toxic habit that so many of us fall prey to at times, ourselves included, people pleasing. Sammi has an incredible ability to be able to create music that has a deeply personal meaning, yet resonates with so many people. We got the opportunity to chat with Sammi on this track when it was first released, in which she revealed the origin of the track for us, “It's just this entire journey of rewiring your brain, finding yourself, then relearning yourself, understanding you and how you work and all of that. There's so much that comes with it, it would take me so long to go through. But, I think in that process, after going through the worst of it, I kind of came out the other side and realised a lot of the things and people in my life were not really very good for me….  Dopamine was kind of birthed around that time and realising I don't have to people please and I don't have to be perfect,” Sammi told us.

Continuing the EP, Sammi goes into her track, Lullaby, which focuses on the turbulent themes of lust to love, and all the emotions that come in between. Within this track, Sammi uses upbeat and quick tempo to hit some sultry and alluring themes whilst telling a story throughout. The 3 minute 22 second track encapsulates all that love can be, from the feelings of heartbreak to feeling as though you and your person are the only two people to exist on this planet.

Moving into the third track, Sammi slides into Lemonade, which is probably our favourite of the releases. The first singles released off the EP set out a new era and direction for Sammi. Lemonade to us feels like an ode to self-love and acceptance, in the most badass possible way. We can’t help but chant along to this track and know it’ll become a cult fave for Sammi fans old and new.

Finishing off the EP, we have Wannabe, featuring Just A Gent. This track leaves the album on such a high, we are awestruck by the pure passion and oomph it exudes. Everyone in all walks of life has to face both their inner critic and the doubts of people around you. Wannabe exudes a big F U to all the people who want to push someone down for their dreams and encourages the brave to keep going onwards with their aspirations.

Sammi Constantine is an artist to keep a close eye on. Her tenacity to keep her passions alive whilst connecting with a broad range of listeners is infectious. We cannot wait to see what is next for the rising star.
