Creative Conversations 040: Nadine Lustre's Glistening LP

Words by Luke Byatt

We caught up with multidisciplinary artist, Nadine Lustre following on from her Wildest Dreams LP. The Filipino actress, singer and music video director dives into the full creative process for the LP as well as accompanying visual album.

Futuremag Music: Hey Nadine, thanks for taking the time to join us today, how're you going?

Nadine Lustre: I'm good! Still on cloud nine about the whole release.

Futuremag Music: On that note, congratulations on the release of the Wildest Dreams LP, it's a stunning work of art. Before we jump into the record could you outline your relationship with music and how you built yourself into the multidisciplinary artist you are today?

Nadine Lustre: Thank you! To be honest, I’m still trying to find my footing with music. I recently started writing my own stuff, and I'm still learning on the production side of things. I am thankful that I am surrounded by good people who I learn from. I believe that everyday is a new achievement as I learn new things. I dive deeply when I have new ideas, and I make sure I dive with all my heart. You really have to learn how to believe in yourself, trust in your craft and drown out all the noise.

Futuremag Music: Jumping into the LP, could you talk us through the production and writing process of the record? How did you blend traditional pop with electronic elements?

Nadine Lustre: Some of the songs were written by Marcus and Calvin, but for the ones that I wrote on… I worked closely with James, Bret and Massiah. We had a two week lock in with Isagani to work on most of the songs.

Futuremag Music: Accompanying the recording is a sensational visual piece, could you explain the translation of the sonic into a visual experience?

Nadine Lustre: This is first and foremost a concept album. All tracks intertwine with one another telling one cohesive story and brings the listener into the world of Wildest Dreams. Our first initial listen of the tracks with Director Dominic Bekhart of Zoopraxi was quite an experience. We listened with our eyes closed and let the music guide us to our initial idea of the visual. The idea kept growing until we knew this was not an experience that could be conveyed with only one video. Finally we landed on the idea of a visual album and that’s really when the storyline came together. The message of believing in yourself and finding one's voice was something that transcends the music and to me that is truly beautiful and something I think the world needs now more than ever.

Futuremag Music: What does the future look like for the music side of your endeavours?

Nadine Lustre: Definitely make more music! music has always been a big part of my life and it’s safe to say that I wanna be making music for a very long time. Music has touched my life in so many ways, and my dream is for mine to touch others.
