Creative Conversations 037: Exploring The Cosmos With Luboku

Words by Luke Byatt

We sat down with Melbourne’s Luboku following on from the release of his debut album, Space Walk. The conceptual body of work explores the human condition and its relationship with the wider cosmos; you can read our full article, HERE. Luboku talks us through the LP, his fondness with the great unknown and much more.

Futuremag Music: Hey Luboku, how're you doing?

Luboku: Hey! I’m going great. It’s been such a nice week, having my album out, and Melbourne opening back up. I can’t wait for the music scene to restart down here - it feels like we’re going to be all hands on deck once it starts rolling.

Futuremag Music: A huge congratulations is in order for the release of your debut album, Space Walk! How does it feel you have this body of work out in the world?

Luboku: Thank you, it is surreal! I’ve wanted to do a conceptual release since I started the project, so I’m chuffed to have completed that milestone.

Futuremag Music: From the opening moments till the very end Space Walk is a sensational sonic journey. Could you talk us through the production and writing process?

Luboku: The writing process on Space Walk was varied, and I think that shows up in the compositions. Some tracks I started with just a basic drum groove and synth line, whereas others were just completely acoustic - written on the piano or guitar with a vocal. I find it inspiring to draw from these different processes, and I enjoy the challenge of wrapping the parts up to create a coherent journey.

Futuremag Music: It's clear that space is a central theme to not only Space Walk, but the Luboku project as a whole. Could you outline why the cosmos is such a central part of the music and brand?

Luboku: It happened very naturally. Space is just intrinsically inspiring for humans - it represents the alien and the adventure; all those things we yearn to discover. I remember being fascinated by all-things-space when I was a kid, so it’s no surprise to hear it coming out in my music now. I also feel like space is an interesting touchstone for electronic music - with ethereal, otherworldly, experimental and massive sounds complementing the vastness of our universe.

Futuremag Music: With a major body of work now under your belt, what are some reflections on your experiences as an artist. What's a piece of advice you'd tell your past self when you launched into the Luboku project endeavour?

Luboku: I wouldn’t want to change much to be honest! It’s been such a nice journey and I have grown so much through the experience of that. Maybe one thing I would impart is to enjoy touring more - playing live is almost impossible right now, and that’s a heavy blow that I don’t think anyone saw coming.
