Creative Conversations 019: Stace Cadet & KLP On Their Mega Hit 'Energy'

Words by Justin Pix

If you’ve tuned into dance radio, been to the gym or listened to any electronic playlist over the past month and a bit, it’s certain you would’ve heard ‘Energy’. We caught up with KLP and Stace Cadet, the legends behind the mega hit. Jump into ‘Energy’ with us as we explore the track’s creation, the pair’s previous collaborations, and much more.

Futuremag Music: Hey KLP & Stace Cadet! How have you guys been going during this season of staying home?

KLP: It’s a rollercoaster ride. Just when I thought we were coming out the other side, now it feels like we are back where we were in March. As hard as it’s all been though there have been positives. Spending more time with family and making loads of music!

Stace Cadet: ‘Energy’ has definitely been a welcomed distraction to lift our spirits in this tricky time.

Futuremag Music: Let's talk about the new collaboration, ‘Energy’. Provided that you guys have collaborated last year on ‘Get on it’, what was it like working together again?

Stace Cadet:  We have a pretty good thing going. You can pretty much guarantee we’ll be working on music together for many moons to come. What you reckon KLP?

KLP: Horrible!! Haha no jokes - Stace Cadet is such a legend. We work together really easily and I think we have a good balance of idea and compromise between us. The song was written pretty quickly and it was such a nice vibe from the get go.

Futuremag Music: Could you guys walk us through the writing and production on this ‘Energy’

KLP: Stace came up to Sydney and we decided to get into the studio together. He had a rather large night the night before (haha) so wasn’t feeling very energetic. So the song topic started from there.

Stace Cadet: Kristy had some cracking vocals and a melody ready to start flirting with so we dove into chopping the vox and wrote up the full lyrics. I stayed up that night till 8am working the tune I was so excited. Over the next few weeks we went back and forth getting the tune in shape and with some final touches from our boy Benson we knew we had something special.

Futuremag Music: ‘Energy’ also features a unique groove, along with energetic and demanding vocals. What was the source of inspiration on this track?

KLP: Haha as above - Stace Cadet not having much energy the day of the session! I was like “well let’s write about that and come up with something so sweaty and obnoxious sounding that it get’s you feeling good.”

Stace Cadet: Thank you alcohol!

Futuremag Music: On the note of alcohol, if ‘Energy’ was a cocktail, what would be in it to best describe the sonic?

KLP: A Cosmopolitan - it looks sweet on the outside but it’s tangy and zesty once you take a sip!

Stace Cadet: Shot of Jameson: Straight up. Belly full of fire.
