Creative Conversations 017: Hyperclap's Club Classic Rework

Words by Luke Byatt

Hailing from Germany, Hyperclap have all your classic dance rework dreams covered. The duo recently released ‘Cry For You’ a 2005 cult dance classic from September. We spoke to Sebastian and Vincent, the pair behind the Hyperclap project about their rework and more.

Futuremag Music: Hey Hyperclap, how're you doing?

Hyperclap: We‘re doing really good. Just constantly in the process of writing and producing new music and enjoying it big time!

Futuremag Music: Could you talk us through your relationship with music through the years?

Hyperclap: We are both music nerds with different musical backgrounds that somehow work really well together. Vincent studied jazz drums and is our musical free spirit, while I don‘t really have a musical training, but fell in love with producing electronic music when I moved to Berlin. We met by chance through a mutual friend, started hanging out, making music and - most importantly - became great friends. And our friendship is what I think really drives Hyperclap.

The first time we went to the studio together we actually tried to make the craziest track ever with the intention that nobody is gonna like it and I think we actually succeeded haha, but in the end we settled on more pleasing stuff that we both enjoy too!

Futuremag Music: 'Cry For You' is a classic club heater! Could you talk us through how you adapted September's original into your sonic creation?

Hyperclap: We had actually never heard of the original till a few months ago, but when we heard it, it was clear that we can make it our own and wanted to do something with it. The goal was to keep the original energetic vibe, but translate it into our own Bass House world - which we think works really well. And since the original is sort of a 2000s update of Bronski Beat‘s Smalltown Boy, we wanted to bring the vibe back to the 2020s for sure!

Futuremag Music: To wrap it up, if Hyperclap was a cocktail, what would be in it to best describe the project?

Hyperclap: Haha well, honestly, we like to go out and drink a lot, if we go out. So let‘s say it’s gonna be 3 or 4 beers mixed with a Whiskey and a Mojito by the end of the night ;)
